Sundance 2020: 10 Films Everyone Is Buzzing About

8. Into The Deep

Imagine shooting a documentary about an interesting individual who is skilled in a certain craft - sports, cooking, you name it - only for them to commit a murder during the filming period. Absolutely horrifying, right?

Well, that's the premise at the heart of Into The Deep, Emma Sullivan's documentary about Danish inventor Peter Madsen. Sullivan was already shooting what seemed like a pretty engaging piece about the talented engineer and his projects, before things took a much darker turn in August 2017 when Madsen murdered Swedish journalist Kim Wall onboard his privately-built submarine.

The movie has been called more "bone-chilling" than many of the horror films in attendance at the festival, with Sullivan deftly capturing the utter confusion and shock that stems from her subject's brutal turn. It streams on Netflix later this year, so we don't have long to wait to witness it for ourselves.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
