Sundance 2022: 20 Films You Need To Know About
9. Living
Living is a remake of Akira Kurosawa's practically perfect 1952 film Ikiru, enough that remaking it just seems like an incredibly bad idea.
But guided by the steady hand of director Oliver Hermanus (Moffie), screenwriter Kazuo Ishiguro, and an arguably never-better Bill Nighy, this is a rare remake that truly succeeds on its own terms.
Nighy plays a British bureaucrat in post-war London who learns that he's suffering from a terminal illness and tries to use his limited remaining time to do something worth remembering.
An elegantly crafted existential drama, Living does nothing to erase Kurosawa's original but offers a vibrant new take topped by the fine efforts of not only Nighy but also co-stars Aimee Lou Wood and Alex Sharp.
