20 Horror Movies That Weren't What Anyone Expected
1. Soft & Quiet
Soft & Quiet is a psychological horror film centered around a kindergarten teacher, Emily (Stefanie Estes), who organises a mixer for "like-minded women," as the synopsis describes them.
The film's trailers don't tip their hand to precisely what Emily is involved with, though the imagery conjured in the trailer might reasonably lead one to assume she's heading up some sort of demonic cult or coven.
But that's not what Soft & Quiet is at all, and in fact there's not a shred of supernatural content in the movie whatsoever.
Instead, early on we learn that Emily is in fact heading up a group of white supremacist women called the Daughters for Aryan Unity, and most of the film's horror instead stems from observing how this group operates, their general dynamic, and a violent altercation that later ensues.
Unsurprisingly this sharp subversion of expectations resulted in a heavily polarised audience response, but it is nevertheless an enticingly provocative and brilliantly acted breath of fresh air.
