7. Yvonne Dies Early - Caught Stealing

Darren Aronofsky's Caught Stealing is a bit of an underappreciated black comedy crime caper in the vein of a Guy Ritchie joint, in which bartender Hank (Austin Butler) inadvertently crosses paths with New York's criminal underworld while cat-sitting for his neighbour.

The film's most prominent female character introduced early on is Hank's girlfriend Yvonne (Zoë Kravitz), and it's a fair assumption that she's going to play a major part in the throughline of the story.

But not quite. Roughly half-way through the film, just as Hank finds himself falling afoul of the dangerous Drucker brothers (Liev Schreiber and Vincent D'Onofrio), he returns to Yvonne's apartment to find her shot dead.

It's a totally shocking moment that spits in the face of typical storytelling convention - there's no suspenseful sequence where Yvonne is held hostage while Hank races to her.

He simply arrives at the aftermath and she's dead, with so much of the movie left to go. But beyond being a jolting moment for the audience, it serves as Hank's motivation for the rest of the film.
