SXSW 2022: 20 Movies You Need To Know About

1. The Unknown Country

Sometimes a low-key road movie is just what the doctor ordered, and Morrisa Maltz's slight drama The Unknown Country makes the absolute most of rural America's natural beauty as a woman, Tana (Lily Gladstone), travels across the Mid-West in the hope of resolving past personal trauma.

Bewilderingly combining fictional drama with documentary-style homespun stories of the locals Tana meets on her travels, this is a beautifully crafted film that doesn't force its own melodramatic hand, instead letting viewers largely figure things out for themselves.

Gladstone, a rising actress set to star opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in Martin Scorsese's upcoming Killers of the Flower Moon, makes for a totally transfixing lead.

The Unknown Country is currently seeking distribution.
