The Amazing Spider-Man 2: 8 Reasons To Be Excited

4. Formidable Villains

The problem with a lot of comic book movies is that the threat provided by the villain is not enough to genuinely make the audience think that the hero is truly under threat. Villains are usually portrayed, at best, as being physically equal to the heroes and, in most cases, weaker. Take General Zod for example €“ he essentially has the same physical statistics as Superman by virtue of being from the same planet. Then have a look at Abomination €“ he essentially has strength and durability in the same ballpark as Hulk thanks to his main power source being Hulk's own blood. Take Red Skull as another example €“ he essentially has the same physical statistics as Captain America thanks to the same Super Soldier treatment. And then there are villains who don't even come close to being a threat to the heroes. Look at the Chitauri €“ none of those foot soldiers were ever any kind of physical threat to the likes of Hulk or Thor (both of whom took masses of them out with ease). They were like boys amongst men going up against the Avengers. Of course, villains are about more than just physical power (take the Joker and Lex Luthor, for example - they aren't physically a match for Batman and Superman respectively, but their intellects and scheming make up for that and they still manage to cause their foes major problems), but it's good to see that Spider-Man is actually physically outmatched for a change in this movie. It will really have the audience on the edge of their collective seat as he takes on a plethora of versatile and threatening opponents.
