The Batman: 10 Things Ben Affleck Must Get Right
5. The Tone
There are many cases for the tone being the number one priority for Affleck considering the particularly dour and inconsistent note of proceedings in the DCEU so far. Fortunately if there is one thing Affleck nails, its tone and the Dark Knight is perfect for the Oscar winning director. Gotham isn’t a pretty place and its inhabitants are potentially the most unsavoury lot in all of comics – perfect for Affleck’s gritty and grounded lens.
The tone of the DCEU has often been cited as being uneven and overtly bleak by critics and fans alike and whilst the world of Batman may be best suited to the look and feel of the films preceding it, Affleck will definitely have to juggle varying tonal shifts with a deft hand.
In many ways, criticism is inevitable in the age of the armchair commentator – accusations of too much humour will undoubtedly fly around alongside the film being self-serious. It’s surely an thankless job but Affleck is certainly well equipped to deal with this perilous balancing act. Justice League may very well set a new tone that becomes the norm going forward. Or maybe they’ll just double down on that Batman v Superman feeling.
