1. Include The Entire Bat-Family

You want the secret to a PERFECT Batman shared universe? Then you should probably start by not having Batman be the ONLY guy working in Gotham.

There are dozens of people in the "Bat-Family", from minor members like Harper Rowe and Huntress, to more regular staples that haven't gotten their due outside of comics yet such as Cassandra Cain and Stephanie Brown. All of them interesting enough to carry their own comic line, and so are definitely interesting enough to carry their own movie.

Batman is a great idea for a shared universe, if you MUST focus such a universe on a single character, because there are so many interesting Batman characters in his mythos that have gotten zero focus in the mainstream. Get the right director and writing team, put the right actors in the right suits, and you potentially have a whole slew of winners ready to diversify Bats' onscreen brand.

The Nightwing and Batgirl movies currently in the works show that WB is definitely thinking about this, but if they want this universe to be successful, then they need to acknowledge the ENTIRE Bat-Family - not just the staples.

John Tibbetts is a novelist in theory, a Whatculture contributor in practice, and a nerd all around who loves talking about movies, TV, anime, and video games more than he loves breathing. Which might be a problem in the long term, but eh, who can think that far ahead?
