No one knew quite what to expect from the Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014. Everyone knew Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and the Hulk, but even the most die-hard fans of the comics would have struggled to recognise some members of this team.

What we were given, however, was a wonderful show of the kind of humour, heart and emotion that every MCU movie can boast, but on a larger scale. And of the five main characters, the one we arguably connected with the most, and shed the most tears over, was a tree that could only say three words in one particular order.

When the team found themselves in trouble on Xandar, Groot used his extraordinary powers to envelope his fellow Guardians, protecting them from the outside threats, and even gave them a beautiful light show as he sacrificed himself to save Rocket, Quill, Gamora and Drax.

This was something truly special, as we not only saw the love Groot had for his new family, but the love Rocket had for Groot. He would rather the whole team died than just Groot, but at least he was able to raise Baby Groot from the death of his best friend. You don't have to speak Groot to understand the character's sentiment just moments before his death.
