The Biggest Mistake Each DCEU Film Has Made
1. Harley Quinn - Birds Of Prey: The Hit-And-Miss Writing
It's a shame Birds of Prey bombed at the box office, as it is actually pretty good. The cast is great, it finally delivers the franchise's first truly awesome villain (a brilliant Ewan McGregor, in what genuinely might be his best performance since Trainspotting) and the action sequences and stylish direction are genuinely insane.
Unfortunately, Birds of Prey faltered somewhat with the writing. The dialogue, gags and non-linear storytelling work very well, but the plot is totally forgettable and doesn't offer an awful lot in the way of substance.
Additionally, the movie is full of jarring tonal shifts. It has a goofy, Deadpool-esque vibe but the way it cuts between light-hearted gags and gruesome violence does give it a rather disjointed feel. It sometimes feels overly mean-spirited as well.
Still, in spite of these flaws, this is a rock-solid superhero film and it's nice to see that the DCEU is carrying on its successful course-correct. Hopefully they'll keep it up.
