The Breast Of Russ Meyer: His Top 9 Movies

9. Cherry, Harry and Raquel! (1970)

RMcherryharryFR Harry - a sheriff - lives with Cherry, a nurse, in small town in the desert. There is also Raquel - a highly sexed writer who likes to pleasure all the men in town just for the hell of it. Cherry is eager to meet Raquel, but Harry won't let her because lesbianism is 'un-American'. Harry and his sidekick Enrique work for a local politician - Mr Franklin - smuggling marijuana over the border. Franklin orders them to kill their contact Apache. They make a botched attempt of killing Apache in the desert and Apache steals Harry's jeep. A few more ballsed up attempts on Apache's life frustrates the hell out of Mr Franklin and he orders Harry to kill Enrique because the latter knows too much. They set up a trap for Enrique, but Apache gets there first and kills him. He also kills Mr Franklin. Cherry and Raquel get to meet each other and they get on famously together - dancing in the nude and smoking some fat doobies. Harry gets killed and the two women continue to make sweet sweet love at the hospital. Charles Napier is completely bad ass as the mean sheriff, he is a genius at portraying slimy baddies. The film has RM's trademark faster than lightning editing which can be confusing at times but ensures that the viewer is never bored. Everybody in the film is having sex with everyone else as usual in RM land. It has to be said that this is one of RM's poorer pictures, the best thing about it is Charles Napier as the hypocritical, law breaking policeman. I'm sure that RM is trying to put across a message about censorship and other moral issues, but with the frantic pace of the movie, the message is garbled. Minor RM.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
