The Cloverfield Paradox Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs
4. It's Suspenseful & Creepy
This is director Julius Onah's first major movie, but you'd probably never guess that purely from watching this film, given the clear visual discipline on display and just how effectively suspenseful it is.
The movie's near-total lack of marketing no doubt helped make it a tense experience from the outset. It really felt like anything could happen at any time, keeping audiences on their toes all the way to the finish line.
Onah also weaves a number of inventively creepy sequences throughout the film, perhaps the most memorable of which involves a detached arm, but the less said about that, the better.
Though Onah is, like his cast, working within the confines of the script, he at least milks these tense beats for every drop they're worth.
