13. The Worlds Shittest Detective
Nolan chose to adapt a comic book character thats had the nickname The Worlds Greatest Detective from like day one. I wouldnt have cared if hed changed the nickname, or even dispensed with it entirely, thats fine by me. But surely abandoning the trait all together is a departure from that soul of the source, right? Nolan's Bats doesnt investigate at all; he just seems to sort of run into encounters, unprepared. Im not surprised Bane beat his ass up in TDKR, Batman practically walked into his fist. I can imagine people preparing their counter arguments already, but Christ, if someone is going to make such a left turn from the source that theyre adapting, why not just write a movie about an entirely different vigilante? One whos a bit of a reckless dumbass. Ill tell you why, because Batman License + Movie + Enough Hype = Kerching. Some of the greatest moments Ive read of Batmans, some of his most impressive displays of character, have come directly from how singularly and thoroughly he pursues his investigations. This is why I was so unimpressed with Nolans Batman on the whole. He doesnt seem to have that trait whatsoever and without it, Nolans Batman is just popcorn fodder when he could have and should have been so much more.
