The Dark Knight Rises: 20 Blunders in Chris Nolan’s Trilogy

14. Alfred Pennyworth

If you€™re looking for the greatest, most smart-mouthed butler in all of modern fiction, look no further than Alfred Pennyworth in the comics. If you€™re after an over-emotional man-servant whose main purpose seems to be to deliver pick-me-up one-liners whenever Bruce Wayne is feeling blue, Michael Caine€™s Alfred will do fine. Caine is a phenomenal performer, no arguments there. I€™m just not sure his character was used to its fullest potential throughout Nolan€™s Batman franchise. I mean how could he have been? With so much going on from The Dark Knight onwards, there€™s little surprise that minor characters such as Alfred, who are so peripheral yet still so important in the make-up of Batman, have been glossed over in such a saccharine manner.
