The Devil All The Time Review: 7 Ups & 3 Downs

5. Antonio Campos' Patient Direction

The film marks quite the career leap for Antonio Campos, who prior to this has worked on smaller-scale thrillers and dramas with just a few main cast members.

But here, Campos proves himself an extremely confident and capable director for something far larger and more demanding, while never letting go of the patient, restrained style of his previous work.

Despite the clear temptation to swing for the fences style-wise, Campos pulls the camera back as to never upstage the actors, lingering long on their expressive performances rather than distracting with fancy directorial flourishes.

The film is plenty stylish all the same, yet in a way that compliments the bleak, stark tone of the story and characters within it.

With all the will in the world, this will give Campos' career quite the boost, and ensure we see him working on projects just as ambitious - if not more so - in the near-future.
