8. Elena's Death

The movie's big twist is that Dom is helping Cipher because she's kidnapped Dom's ex-girlfriend Elena (Elsa Pataky), who to Dom's shock has also given birth to their son, having fallen pregnant shortly before Dom learned Letty was alive and reunited with her.

Elena and their son are kept prisoner on-board Cipher's aircraft, and after Dom blows the New York job, he's punished by being forced to watch Cipher's henchman Rhodes (Kristofer Hivju) shoot Elena in the head.

It's an ugly scene that serves as a potent reminder that these movies can be more than consequence-free mayhem: characters we've grown to like, even ones as relatively minor as Elena, can be wiped out to surprisingly strong emotional effect.

It helps hammer home the desperation of Dom's situation as well as Cipher's savagery and decisively sets up the balls-to-the-wall third act.
