The Joker Explanation NO ONE Is Talking About
Speaking to Vanity Fair, Philips said,
“Go try to be funny nowadays with this woke culture [...] There were articles written about why comedies don’t work anymore - I’ll tell you why, because all the funny guys are like, ‘f**k this s**t, because I don’t want to offend you.’
It’s hard to argue with 30 million people on Twitter. You just can’t do it, right? So you just go, ‘I’m out.’”
He then went on to talk to The Wrap about the pre-production process and how he got Joaquin Phoenix on board, saying “I literally described to Joaquin at one point in those three months as like, ‘Look at this as a way to sneak a real movie in the studio system under the guise of a comic book film’ [...] It was literally like ‘Let’s make a real movie with a real budget and we’ll call it f–ing Joker’. That’s what it was.”
The "real movie" comments are interesting, especially in light of someone like Martin Scorsese stating that the MCU movies are glorified theme park rides, and it almost confirms everything Todd is saying - that when a mass audience is faced with such an artistically minded, passionate film, the response is sheer controversy.
Another thing to consider, is the movie's production.
