The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part Review - 6 Ups And 2 Downs
4. Up: Pitch-Perfect Tone

As always, Lord and Miller never fail to craft scripts that bounce between heartfelt and hilarious so effortlessly. LEGO Movie 2 maintains the exact tone it needs at every moment, whether it's a fully comedic sequence or a heartfelt one where two people try to form a connection with each other. No joke feels out of place and no emotional beat feels unearned.
Again, much of this couldn't have been achieved without the screenplay, the vocal talent, and Mike Mitchell's direction. No performance is half-hearted, revelations and important turning points are properly set up, and the mood is firmly set well in advance.
All too often you see animated movies and even live-action blockbusters being afraid to get serious or feel that comedy is always the primary go-to, but The Second Part proves otherwise. Lord and Miller's trademark 'make you laugh hysterically, then make you cry' style is on-display once again and it helps give this film a greater distinction over other movies in this genre.
