The Lord Of The Rings: 10 Best Fighters In Middle-Earth Definitively Ranked

9. Carcharoth

Most fans would find the idea of werewolves existing in Middle-earth a bit silly. But go back to the First Age and you’ll find that they did, and, according to The Fellowship of the Ring, possibly still do.

These were not the traditional lycanthropes, however, but more akin to the wargs seen in the films; Large, frighteningly intelligent and immensely strong corruptions of wolves that would give even the likes of Beorn pause.

Most savage and powerful of them all was Carcharoth. Reared by Morgoth to be the guardian of the gates of Angband, Carcharoth was far larger than his brethren, a monstrous terror of poisonous fangs and seemingly limitless strength; Strength so great that it was believed he could not be defeated.

He would fight only one duel, against the foe it was prophesied only he could kill – Huan, the Hound of Valinor. After Carcharoth had carved a swathe of destruction through Beleriand, Huan tracked him down and engaged him in single combat. True to prophecy, Carcharoth mortally wounded Huan, but not before being killed himself.

Had he lived to the War of Wrath, the devastation he would have inflicted on the Host of Valinor can only be imagined.
