Even if The New Mutants was the unlikely box office hit of the summer (people are desperate for new content, but that still seems like a stretch), the chances of Disney making a sequel are relatively slim. As mentioned, Marvel Studios has plans to reboot the X-Men franchise, and it feels like this movie is being released more out of obligation than anything else at this point.

However, when Boone signed on to direct this Marvel Comics adaptation for Fox, he explains that he did so with ideas for a trilogy that, yes, would have ultimately included the aforementioned Warlock.

"They were all supposed to be kind of separate horror genre films: the first one’s like a rubber reality horror movie, the second one was supposed to be an alien invasion movie with Warlock, and then the third one was going to take all these elements from the X-Men crossover from the late ‘80s and early ‘90s called 'Inferno' to be a kind of supernatural, apocalyptic horror movie. That was the plan."

Honestly, that sounds pretty awesome, and if it had included Mister Sinister and a demon invasion of New York City, the New Mutants could have been put on the map in a big way in the X-Men Universe.
