The Nice Guys: 10 Reasons It's The Most Overrated Film Of The Year

2. Half The Jokes Fall Flat

This is certainly one of the more curious elements inherent to The Nice Guys, in as much as "not consistently funny" has never been a problem with Shane Black's work before; usually every joke hits the mark in a Black movie, whereas the gags in this film are way more hit and miss throughout.

To cite an example: the "and stuff" joke, which reoccurs several times in the movie. Holland's daughter, Holly, likes to say "and stuff" at the end of sentences, such as "there are whores here and stuff," and he tells her to drop the "and stuff". But what does this joke even mean? Why is he bothered about her saying "and stuff?" It lacks the proper context to actually be properly funny. It feels off, like you're failing to understand an in-joke that might not exist.

And this isn't the only joke in the film that doesn't play well; for every joke that lands in The Nice Guys, another falls flat, either due to timing or editing issues, or the fact that - as with "and stuff" - it lacks the right context.

Who knew a film with a giant, talking bee could fail so heavily in this regard?
