Thor: Ragnarok Reviews - 12 Critical Reactions You Need To Know
7. Cate Blanchett's Hela Will Divide Fans
"[Loki] gets a serious run for his money this time out from Blanchett’s Hela, a magnificent creation whose own wounded pride and need for attention...drive her ruthless plan to seek vengeance against Odin and his sons. Blanchett is somewhat underused, but she holds the screen every time she’s on." - Den of Geek
"If there’s a weak link in the line-up it’s Blanchett’s Hela...Hela’s scenes, while essential to the plot, feel an unwelcome distraction, leaving us, like Mjolnir, aching for a return to the Thunder God’s side." - Empire
"Blanchett gleefully chews the scenery, yet we’ve seen this type of character in other genre movies...Blanchett’s deliciously hammy performance has more personality, however, and calls to mind Max von Sydow’s Ming the Merciless in the ‘80s sci-fi camp classic Flash Gordon, which Thor: Ragnarok has been made very much in the spirit of." - IGN
"The Oscar-winner brings a tremendous amount of gravitas to any role she takes on, but here she adds a delicious sense of scene-chewing malevolence to the mix. Hela is an incredibly powerful villain, capable of separating Thor from his hammer — but she also takes obvious, compelling delight in being as evil as she can at any given moment." - The Verge
Curiously, critics have been heavily divided on Cate Blanchett's presence in the film as the primary antagonist, Hela. Though most have praised Blanchett's hammy, over-the-top performance, opinion has been more mixed on her character's arc, some deeming it forgettable Marvel slop, while others felt the total opposite, that she's one of the best MCU baddies to date.
Make up your own minds, basically, but you can expect fans to generally be just as divided when the movie releases.
