Thor: Ragnarok Reviews - 12 Critical Reactions You Need To Know
8. It Actually Feels Like A Taika Waititi Film
"The extent to which [Waititi's] been allowed to push the longboat out — sailing right through the bay of humorous asides and deep into the straits of absurdity — is nothing short of extraordinary. For the first time in 17 (count them) movies, Marvel has delivered something that isn’t an action movie leavened with humour, but a full-bore comedy using blockbuster spectacle as a backdrop for gags." - Empire
"Take a bow, then, director Taika Waititi. The New Zealander has somehow parlayed his offbeat comic sensibility straight from indie gems like What We Do in the Shadows and Hunt for the Wilderpeople and on to a canvas a hundred times bigger." - Time Out
"Let loose on the Marvel universe, the New Zealander manages not only to keep the faithful happy, but also bring his own brand of silliness to the proceedings without ever falling into predictable territory." - HeyUGuys
"What he has achieved here is what so many before him have failed to do. Which is, he has made a Marvel movie with charm to spare. It’s like the Mars Attacks! of Marvel movies – and in a good way." - Little White Lies
Perhaps the biggest concern going into Ragnarok was that Taika Waititi would be the latest filmmaker swallowed up by the MCU sausage factory, coerced into adopting a more flat and generic directorial style, denying any sort of personal stamp on the end product.
Thankfully, that doesn't seem to be the case at all, and while this is still a Marvel Studios movie through and through, Waititi's uniquely eccentric voice is allowed to breathe for the most part, making this by turns the weirdest entry into the franchise to date.
Hopefully the critical success of the film might encourage Kevin Feige to allow other directors to impart a little more of themselves onto their MCU projects in future.
