15. Florence Pugh - Midsommar

Midsommar Florence Pugh

Florence Pugh is widely regarded as one of the most talented actors working in Hollywood today, and in such a short time has solidified her status as a star who can be relied upon to give an outstanding performance.

However, it's often too easy not to consider the toll being taken on a person who gives so much to each role. In particular, playing Dani in Ari Aster's Midsommar forced Pugh to go to depths of grief she had never even come close to knowing.

Dani's story, and her character, is heartbreaking, as the very first scene shows the aftermath of her sister first killing their parents, and then herself. Pugh, in the interest of an authentic performance, imagined the death of her own siblings, and as the film progressed, she pushed deeper into this spiral of grief to the point that she was attending the funeral of her entire family.

Yes, she gave an outstanding performance that arguably deserved more recognition, but she found herself depressed for months after the fact, struggling to get past the movie and her character. She admitted to herself that she shouldn't go head first into any similar situations like that again, and has not done another horror film since, though even for Yelena in Thunderbolts*, she explored a surprising amount of depth in grief, sadness, and isolation as well.
