Tom Cruise: 5 Awesome Performances and 5 That Sucked

4. Ray Ferrier - War of the Worlds

Tom Cruise is many, many things, but the one thing he could never ever pull off is blue-collar worker. It's Tom Cruise - the flawlessly charismatic beautiful man with the winning smile and charming arrogance. There is much to like about Steven Spielberg's adaptation of the classic novel, but casting Cruise was a critical mistake. It's just impossible to believe that he is that character, and though Spielberg has his many faults, especially when dwelling in more serious material, he's always been excellent at casting, but not here. A big flaw in the film is the fact that it is very one-note, including Cruise's performance. The character is cliche ridden to begin with - he's a divorced, failing father who has his kids for the weekend - but Cruise doesn't appear to know what to do with the character, so just shouts and runs a lot. It's Cruise's most disappointing turn, and received a Razzie nomination for it, and sadly, it's deserved.
