4. The Money Pit - Walter Fielding
A money pit is defined as a property that you have high aspirations for but it continues to cause you more problems than its worth, until it finally becomes unprofitable. This is basically what the film The Money Pit was to Tom Hanks and company as well. Released as a starring vehicle for both Hanks (fresh off his hit Splash) and TV star Shelly Long, the duo play a couple who purchase a beautiful country home together at a rock bottom price. Little do they know the house, dubbed a fixer-upper, leads to one renovation disaster after another. The slow and agonizing process of fixing up the house is captured on film, and for 90 minutes we have to endure a shoddy excuse for a comedy as Hanks and Long ham it up for the camera. Hanks is adept at physical comedy, yet he has nothing to work with here, as elaborate Hollywood stunts take precedent over what could have been subtle comedy. Hanks pretty much just gives up around the same time his character does, and the last act of the film seems thrown together, with no solid outcome to this dull story.
