Toy Story Of Terror: 11 Easter Eggs & References You Probably Missed

4. Combat Carl

Combat Carl One of the key new characters is Combat Carl, voiced by Carl Weathers, and there are a number of interesting points to raise associated with the character. First off, this is the second time Combat Carl has appeared in the franchise - he was the tragic toy blown up by a firework in the first movie by Sid - and the character was actually supposed to play the role eventually given to the telephone in Toy Story 3. He even has his own Small Fry style tiny side-kick, Carl Junior, who almost steals the show, and is a clear reference to MacLane's work on the Toy Story short. Then there's the make-up of the character: as a reference to Weathers' iconic performance in Predator, Combat Carl is wearing an outfit that is almost identical to that worn by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the action classic. And of course, the missing limb could also be a reference to Predator, though comedy fans may prefer to think its more of a reference to Weathers' work on Adam Sandler's Happy Gilmore, in which he plays a one-handed golf pro who loses his hand to a crocodile attack. Crocodile... iguana... it's not that much of a stretch.
