Transformers: Age Of Extinction - 10 Ways Michael Bay Stole Your Money

5. Soap Opera Dialogue And Characters

The trouble with having human beings in your movie is that they have to, you know, do and say stuff, and the viewer has to be led to care about them. Or you could just graft on Soap Opera Backstory #89 and hope nobody will notice. Much simpler that way. So Mark Wahlberg plays a downtrodden type, a guy who€™s looking for The Next Big Score or at least some quick cash to stop the bank from taking his house. Then he encounters Optimus Prime and once Earth€™s future hangs in in the balance, voila, all his problems seem to disappear. Well, all except one. When the special effects are out grabbing a smoke, there€™s an uninteresting subplot about Wahlberg being an overprotective dad and giving Nicola Peltz a hard time about her boyfriend not being good enough. Do you think there€™ll be a scene later where Wahlberg relents and loosens up? Didn€™t see that one coming.
