True Story Of The 8 Best Spider-Man Movies Never Made

1. 2019 - Tom Holland's Marvel-less Spider-Man 3

Spider-Man MCU
Marvel Studios

Spider-Man's first appearance in the MCU was in 2016's Captain America: Civil War, and he was most recently seen in 2019's Spider-Man: Far From Home. It's been a very lucrative partnership for both Sony and Disney, but last year, it almost came to an end.

In August 2019, Spider-Man was pulled from the MCU after Sony and Disney failed to reach a new agreement for the character's future. Disney, reportedly, wanted a bigger slice of the profits, but Sony was unwilling to budge.

While this development was something of a nightmare from a fan perspective, it wasn't necessarily a bad thing from Spidey's point of view. He would still be getting movies, and even though we didn't learn very much about this possible new direction, we do know that Tom Holland thought a Marvel-less Spidey 3 would've been great:

"The future of Spider-Man was still very bright with Sony. We had a really, really wonderful idea of how we could sort of transition into a Spider-Man without the MCU."

In all likelihood, the plan would've been to fold Spider-Man into Sony's own little Marvel cinematic universe, which currently comprises 2018's Venom, the upcoming Venom 2, and the upcoming Morbius. That being said, the Morbius trailer did include a shot of Spider-Man, so maybe they're doing that anyway.

For now though, we won't get to find out how Sony would've dealt with Spider-Man outside the MCU, because a month after they broke up, Sony and Disney gave each other a big sloppy kiss, and stopped arguing over the custody of their child.

As a result, Spider-Man 3 will be released in 2021 (hopefully!), and the character will continue to play a role in the MCU.
