Uma Thurman: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

3. Irene Cassini - Gattaca

A movie that shows that box office success isn€™t always a trustworthy sign of a movie€™s quality. Gattaca was a flop upon release but would quickly become a well respected cult favourite. The movie is set in a sterile future where people are assigned jobs based on their genetics instead of their abilities. Ethan Hawke plays a man looking to become an astronaut despite his bad genes and he falls in love with his co-worker played by Thurman along the way. The future seen in Gattaca is a cold and repressed one where people need to constantly hide their true feelings. Uma's character starts out as frosty but as the story progresses she reveals more layers of herself. She is held back in society by a small genetic flaw but still believes in the system. When she learns the truth about Hawke and how he managed to overcome his condition, her resulting crisis of faith is very believable. It's a tricky role but Thurman managed to convey a whole range of emotions that are going on below the surface, which then start to rise up believably throughout the story.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
