With all the increasing talk about adapting classic family games into blockbuster movies, there have been more than a few passing jokes online about the prospect of a Hungry Hungry Hippos movie.
Well, it's actually happening - er, sort of.
In November 2024, the horror film Hungry was announced, which revolves around a group of holidaymakers who end up fighting for their lives when an apparently famished, ravenous hippo catches a whiff of them in the Louisiana swamplands.
James Nunn (One Shot trilogy) directs, while the cast is led by Madison Davenport and Joaquim de Almeida.
Creature features have shown themselves to be consistently popular with audiences, yet for as dangerous as hippos are in reality, they simply don't have a ferocious reputation in the collective consciousness.
The fact that the film's title is very clearly leaning into the bit and winking at the audience suggests this isn't a monster flick that's going to take itself one iota too seriously.
