20 Upcoming Movies Facing Huge Issues

19. James Cameron Is Losing Interest - Avatar 4

The fourth Avatar movie is currently slated to release on December 21, 2029, but even ignoring the fact that the recent third film, Avatar: Fire and Ash, seemed to demonstrate the law of diminishing returns firmly kicking in, there's a far bigger problem to consider - James Cameron sounds totally over it.

Even as far back as 2022, Cameron stated in interviews that he was considering handing the reins to another filmmaker for Avatar 4 and 5, and the 72-year-old director recently stated that as he enters the "last act" of his career, he's mulling the need to prioritise "other stories."

So, while Avatar 4 will surely get made by somebody - especially with one-third having already been filmed due to the ages of the younger cast members - it seems quite clear that Cameron's enthusiasm for the IP is sliding off.

And honestly, after doing nothing but Avatar for over 20 years it's tough to blame him, even if it's a shame that the franchise seems destined to limply peter out with its current creative trajectory.
