Upgrade Review: 7 Ups & 2 Downs

1. The Dull Supporting Characters

Though Logan Marshall-Green's protagonist Grey Trace is plenty interesting, the supporting characters? Not so much. Especially undercooked is the movie's antagonist, Eron Keen (Harrison Gilbertson), who never really amounts to being much more than a generic tech innovator with dubious motives.

Even less interesting is Cortez (Get Out's Betty Gabriel), a detective assigned to investigate the death of Grey's wife Asha (Melanie Vallejo), who is largely pigeonholed into over-familiar detective cliches. Gabriel tries, but the part's woefully under-written and, honestly, could've been cut from the film entirely.

Elsewhere most of the goons Grey comes into contact with are largely devoid of personality and merely a means to an end, to forward the plot and set-up the next action beat. Thankfully Grey is compelling enough even when he's left without sufficiently intriguing screen partners.

These gripes aside, Upgrade is a howling good time. Here's everything it gets right...
