Venom Review: 5 Ups & 5 Downs

4. The Humour

Venom Tongue
Sony

Weirdly, a lot of the reviews that appeared ahead of release seemed to insinuate - or outright state - that they didn't know whether they were supposed to be laughing or whether the laughs that the film inspired were actually intentional. This is absolute horse-sh*t of the highest order.

Sure, there's way too much po-facedness about the first half and the potential for laughs there are very few and far between (in fact only Michelle Williams and Stan Lee - yes that guy's in it have moments that inspire laughs other than Hardy), but as soon as the film realises that it's genuinely a black comedy, it's very successful with it.

Hardy arguing with himself as Brock and Venom is gloriously funny and Venom essentially being Brock's Tyler Durden and mocking him when he's not up to being his ideal host is just as good too. If you somehow don't get a laugh out of this, you've got something wrong with you. And you can rest assured it was probably intended to have that effect too.
