Vera Farmiga likes The Boy in the Striped Pajamas

vera_farmiga.jpgThe Departed was the first time I ever saw Vera Farmiga in a movie, and I thought she did a pretty fine job with a slightly under-written role. Miramax have attached Farmiga to star in the WWII drama The Boy in the Striped Pajamas based on a book by John Boyne. The book focuses on a German family who get re-located in the town of Auschwitz, where an unlikely friendship develops between two boys living on opposite sides of the concentration camp fence. Farmiga plays the mother of one of the boys, who quickly becomes horrified when she begins to suspect what is really happening in those camps. Miramax head honcho said this of the flick.... "Although it takes place during WWII, it is entirely relevant today, as it deals with the innocence of children living in a world of prejudice and the tragic consequences that we see every day," British director Mark Herman who helmed the flicks Brassed Off, Purely Belter and Little Voice over here in the U.K. is signed on to direct. It's by the far the most serious work Herman has ever been attached too and this is really going to test Farmiga's skills as an actress. Emotionally dealing with the events of the holocaust as a German mother is just about as testing a role as she could have taken. If she does a bad job, the film won't work. Like I said, she's great in The Departed but this role will really test her and we will find out if she really is the real deal. source - coming soon, variety
