W. feels the PAYNE!

A rarity in Hollywood, a video game adaptation tops the box office charts this weekend. Mark Wahlberg's starring action vehicle MAX PAYNE earned $18 million from it's wide release, which was surprisingly bigger than the much anticipated adaptation of RESIDENT EVIL in 2002 but still only makes it the 9th biggest video game adaptation in history. Of course to no-one's surprise, the movie killed at the reviews, a 17% Rotten Rating with barely any love for it from the top critics. W, a movie that I thought would have gotten so much more wide appeal managed just $10.5 million after a strong opening on Friday. Still, the movie has the strong subject matter to stay around for a while and if it reaches $45 million by it's end run, it will have been a success. Josh Brolin seems a shoe-in for an Oscar nom.

1 Max Payne (2008) $18M $18M 2 Beverly Hills Chihuahua (2008) $11.2M $69.1M 3 The Secret Life of Bees (2008) $11.1M $11.1M 4 W. (2008) $10.6M $10.6M 5 Eagle Eye (2008) $7.34M $81.3M 6 Body of Lies (2008) $6.88M $24.5M 7 Quarantine (2008) $6.3M $24.7M 8 Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist (2008) $3.9M $26.7M 9 Sex Drive (2008) $3.57M $3.57M 10 Nights in Rodanthe (2008) $2.68M $36.9M The biggest surprise of the weekend was THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES, a Fox Searchlight drama based on Sue Monk Kidd's novel about a 14 year-old girl who is haunted by the memory of her late mother. Starring Dakota Fanning, Jennifer Hudson, Queen Latifah and Paul Bettany... the movie had very little buzz going into the weekend but ended up topping W. with a $11.1 million. EAGLE EYE has now grossed $81 million but the thriller with bigger names BODY OF LIES is really struggling, now grossing $24.5 million which is a huge disaster for a movie made for $70 million. And finally SEX DRIVE, a movie I called the next "AMERICAN PIE" on Friday looks to have been a small disaster, grossing just $3.57 million on a budget of $19 million and should be out of the charts by next weekend. source - coming soon
