19. THAT Jump Scare - Insidious
We're going to honour a few all-timer jump scares on this list, and first up we've got Insidious, which despite its mere $1.5 million budget manages to deploy a jump scare that expertly combines an innately disturbing image with perfect timing.
In the scene, Josh (Patrick Wilson) is talking to his mother Lorraine (Barbara Hershey) in what appears to be a moment of respite between scares.
But just as Lorraine finishes detailing a dream she had to Josh, we hard-cut back to Josh, where the Lipstick-Face Demon (Joseph Bishara) can suddenly be seen behind his head, just as it lets out a screech much to Lorraine's horror.
There's nothing majorly fancy about this jump scare execution-wise, but it just works because we're lulled into a false sense of security by the fairly calm chit-chat going on and the fact it's taking place in broad daylight.
The sharp cut to the demon, accompanied by some spine-tingling sound design, makes it a jump scare that the Insidious franchise has never even gotten close to topping.
