It really seemed like Benedict Cumberbatch's introduction to the MCU could've gone either way, but it ended up being a much better-than-expected superhero romp, gracefully throwing magic into the MCU while giving its title character a highly entertaining origin story.

Yes, superhero movies don't really need another rich white dude becoming a powerful legend, and that goes a way to explaining why Wonder Woman feels so damn fresh, but it's still damn impressive that director Patty Jenkins managed to beat Marvel at their own game.

The MCU origin story formula is so well-honed at this point, and Cumberbatch is so good in the role, that few could've seen him being bested by a film helmed by someone who hasn't directed a theatrical feature in 15 years, starring an Israeli model-turned-actress with dubious acting plaudits. Go figure.
