And now for something a little different. Josh Trank's Chronicle was an attempt to create a more grounded and gritty superhero movie, shot through the prism of a teen drama while making surprisingly great use of the well-worn found footage conceit.

What really pushes this one over the top is Trank's strong direction, all the more staggering as it's his feature debut, and the performances, from Dane DeHaan in particular.

It takes itself seriously and the gamble actually pays off, because these characters feel like real young people, and there's an undeniable wish fulfillment aspect to watching what they get up to once they obtain superpowers.

It's not that fair to compare this $12 million movie to the $150 million Wonder Woman, sure, but the latter at least provided a welcome reminder that a colossal budget doesn't necessarily mean a lack of ideas.
