While this new image proves that Steve Trevor will be back in Wonder Woman's sequel, we don't know how much of a role Pine's character will actually play. If Steve did die in the plane explosion, then perhaps his appearance in Wonder Woman 1984 will be nothing more than a hallucination brought on by a villainous antagonist.

To say that the world of the DC Extended Universe is not a very nice place would be a bit of an understatement. The dark world has all sorts of bad guys out there - many of whom possess supernatural abilities. Enchantress from Suicide Squad springs to mind. During the 2016 film, the devilish character makes Harley Quinn experience a vision of The Joker, despite the fact that Harley's beloved Puddin' had seemingly died earlier in the film.

As the supernatural exists in the DCEU, it's entirely possible that Steve's appearance in the upcoming sequel could be a figment of Diana's imagination, brought on by someone who is preying on her weaknesses. It would certainly be a great way to get the upper hand over the Amazon princess as we saw in Justice League that the subject of Steve Trevor is still a sore spot for her.
