Wonder Woman Review: 7 Ups & 4 Downs

3. The Romance Is Surprisingly Compelling

One thing that most superhero movies get wrong is romance: even the MCU struggles to conjure up love stories that don't feel horrendously forced and unnecessary, yet Wonder Woman dares to actually give it center stage.

The romance between Diana and Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) feels surprisingly organic considering how inherently absurd it is, in large part thanks to the sizzling chemistry between Gal Gadot and Chris Pine.

As such, when the movie stops for five minutes for the pair to talk and dance, it actually works and adds to their characterisation rather than feeling like a studio-mandated affectation.

It's absolutely one of the best romances in recent superhero memory, and is pretty much the last thing you'd expect the DCEU to totally nail.
