Woody Allen: Analysing 8 Of His Movies Before Annie Hall

7. Sleeper (1973)

sleeper In his 1973 futuristic parody of the Sci-Fi format, Woody Allen plays Miles Monroe, a man who is cryogenically frozen against his will in the 1970s only to re-enter the world two hundred years later. He is revived by a group of radical scientists who hope to recruit Miles to spy on the tyrannical government now in charge of America, as he is the only human being (belonging to the past) not to have a 'known biometric identity'. Before the plan can take shape, police storm the laboratory, arresting all the scientists but Miles manages to evade the law by disguising himself as a robot. This move results in him becoming a robot servant for Luna (Diane Keaton), who is quite happy living under the current regime. When Miles eventually reveals himself to be a human, he kidnaps Luna in order to find out the location of a secret government plan described to him by the scientists. Chaos ensues, and after many arguments and attempted escapes, Luna changes her views and gives her support to Miles. The pair bring down the dictatorship by assassinating the last remaining part of the recently bombed leader - his nose. Miles and Luna eventually fall in love, with Miles trying to convince Luna that men and women can be intimate together, as she is swayed by modern day thinking that meaningful love can not exist. Classic moments are on offer, one includes Miles, in robot gear, awaiting mechanical repair (including forceful removal of the head) with other machine servants and decides to make a hasty but polite exit. This Sci-Fi comedy epic goes down as one of Woody's most loved pieces of work.
