20 Movie Roles That Were Insanely Miscast

Michael Collins is a generally terrific historical drama albeit one with a massive asterisk - the casting of Julia Roberts as Kitty Kiernan, the love interest of Liam Neeson's eponymous Irish revolutionary.

While it's always impressive when actors with a distinct public persona, look, and voice manage to completely transform themselves, in Roberts' case, she never quite convinces as an Irish woman per her highly shaky accent - and that's being polite.

And even if you could somehow forgive the dodgy accent, Roberts just sticks out like a sore thumb in an otherwise pared-down dramatic piece.

By sheer screen presence alone, Roberts feels out of place, and it's tough to forget that we're looking at Julia Roberts Playing an Irish Woman.

As such it's easy to assume that she was cast in the film for largely cynical commercial reasons, because if the artistic result was all that mattered, why not cast one of the hundreds of brilliant Irish actresses who could've knocked the role out of the park?
