X-Men Dark Phoenix - 8 Things It Must Do
4. Don't Botch The Villain
Apocalypse is one the X-Men's all time greatest enemies in the comic books, an infinitely powerful being that effectively created an entire alternate timeline after murdering Professor Xavier.
Remember the fan excitement when renowned actor Oscar Isaac was cast to play him?
Remember the massive disappointment upon learning the movie completely messed it up?
Jessica Chastain is heavily rumored to play Lilandra Neramani, Empress of the Shi'ar Empire, and one of the biggest characters in the original Dark Phoenix Saga. Quite what Lilandra's role would be remains to be seen, but there's no question that Chastain would completely own the role if she were given the chance.
Lilandra might not be as iconic as Apocalypse, but if you get someone of the acting caliber of Jessica Chastain to sign on to a superhero film, you'd better utilize her correctly.
In the comics, Lilandra's goal is not one of global destruction, which is part of what made Apocalypse so generic. Rather, after Phoenix accidentally wipes out a planet, killing billions in the process, Lilandra sees Phoenix as the galaxy's biggest threat and vows to execute her, obviously pitting her against the X-Men hoping to save Jean Grey. If X-Men: Dark Phoenix follows similarly along these lines, Lilandra could be one the series' most relatable and sympathetic villains ever.
Please don't screw it up.
