Disappointingly (but perhaps not surprisingly), Dark Phoenix is lifting the exact same story arc from X-Men III: The Last Stand, by having Charles suppress Jean's 'dark' persona as a child.
It's frustratingly familiar, but it also serves as our best indication of where the story is heading. Looking on the positive side of things, this could even be Fox's way of making up for The Last Stand, by having the story focus more on Jean, and not Wolverine.
Either way, it's hard not to escape the sense of disappointment this retread of XIII is. Here's hoping it can make it more interesting come February.
