X-Men: Apocalypse Reviews- 12 Early Reactions You Need To Know
1. It's All "Dialled Up To 11", But Not Entirely Successfully
Despite the accusations that he couldn't quite handle the results, the reviews do seem to acknowledge Singer's attempt to go bigger. As The Guardian say, there's an agenda to outdo what's come before:
"The idea of an apocalypse means every dial has to be turned up to 11 and this film certainly provides bangs for your buck, although there is less space for the surreal strangeness of the X-Men to breathe, less dialogue interest, and they do not have the looser, wittier joy of the Avengers."
ComingSoon also use the same phrase:
"Singer and his co-horts (many of them also veterans of the series) deliver well-crafted thrills and a notable lack of experimentation, falling back on elements they know will work and amping them up to eleven."
Sadly it feels like that agenda for bigger pay-off was fudged, and part of the reason for the other issues. It's a major shame: the X-Men brand so far has been great and doubling down on the successful elements should have been a banker for further success: it just seems that in light of Civil War and Deadpool, that innovation can't be overlooked without a critical bite-back.
