10 Amazing Games You Didn't Realise Aged HORRIBLY

5. Metroid

Red dead redemption: Undead Nightmare
Nintendo

The original 1986 NES version of Metroid is undeniably one of the most influential and important games of all time, yet if you haven't revisited it in years or even decades, you might be in for a shock.

The lack of a map, repetitive locations, and general level of challenge make Metroid a gruelling, unforgiving experience today, especially compared to every other entry in the franchise.

Its freedom of exploration and atmosphere are undeniable, but this franchise-birthing entry is enough of a chore to play that you're better off just skipping it and playing the generally excellent Zero Mission remake instead.

Zero Mission strips away much of the original's frustration and makes for a smoother, more enjoyable time on the whole, enough that the only folk who still stick with the original are purists or masochists.

While many genre-defining retro games are still eminently playable decades on, Metroid sadly just isn't one of them unless you've got the patience of a saint.
