7. Baba Is You

Returning to the genre of game that I’m pretty sure I could make in MS Paint but certainly wouldn’t have the brilliance to envision or program, we’ve got Baba Is You.

Baba Is You is as ugly in graphics as it is absolutely brilliant in construction.

The wildly clever puzzle game doesn’t even have the excuse of some other entries on this list of simply being from a different time where processing power or art budgets simply couldn’t allow for a better looking final product. Nope, this one came out in 2019. It casts you as Baba, a little white creature which looks like something your kid would draw and you’d humour them saying it looks great. The animations are basic, as in, things pretty much just shake gently on screen, the only clue that your game hasn’t crashed.

As I mentioned, though, this absolutely doesn’t matter. If anything, it’s actually better. The puzzle solving is so complicated that not having high definition graphics in the way when you’re problem-solving is seriously preferable.

You’ll be pushing around blocks that change the rules of each level, ultimately seeking to create a win condition you can achieve. And, of course, none of that requires fancy graphics. Amazing game. Awful graphics. Perfect result.
