When it comes to shorter video game experiences, sometimes simplicity is key. Though there is always a place for beautifully directed narrative or dynamic gameplay mechanics, sometimes we just want to run around and smash things in the face.

Ape Out has a simple premise, you are an Ape and you need to escape. The aim is to complete the levels in the fastest and most efficient way possible without dying, evocative of the frantic pace of Hotline Miami. The simple controls let players focus on the moment to moment action, letting instinct take control. What sets Ape Out apart even further is it's aesthetic.

Every frame looks like it has jumped straight out of a Blue Note vinyl from the 50s. The sharp angles and bold colours of the Ape; the blood splatter springing off of the cobalt walls with a fascinating glimmer. The freeing jazz soundtrack; the backdrop of each level, working dynamically with you.

Every hit of a snare represents another human spine snapped under your mighty ape hands.

Ape Out is magnetic and truly addictive, making you come back for more even when the final level is done.
