10 Awesome Video Games With AWFUL Titles
1. The Lord Of The Rings: Battle For Middle-Earth II: Rise Of The Witch-King
Just... what? Even the abbreviation for this name is too long, clocking in with TLOTR:BFM-EII:ROTWK. And exactly whose idea was it to have two separate colons in the title?
Obviously, Lord Of The Rings is a hugely popular franchise, even moreso in 2006 when the game came out, riding on the success of the movie’s coattails. Having said that, the actual ‘The Lord Of The Rings’ doesn’t actually need to be in the title; a logo on the box would probably suffice.
Even then, the game is clearly a sequel and the fact the title includes ‘Middle-Earth’ should really be enough to tie it to the franchise.
Middle-Earth: Shadow Of Mordor (and sequel Shadow Of War) both follow this logic, although admittedly they lean into the Lord Of The Rings aesthetic a little less than Rise Of The Witch King.
The game itself is a real time strategy sim, based closely on Peter Jackson’s movies, though with some differences here and there. Other than perhaps the Lego games, it’s the closest you’ll get the playing the movies.
According to the Guinness Book Of Records, this holds the record for longest video game title, a feat which will hopefully never be beaten.
